Update on Of Gold and Iron

I sort of did not intend to disappear off the face of the blogging earth. I really meant to do some progress updates for Of Gold and Iron, build up some hype or whatever. But ah, oh well, now I shall just wrap them all up into one big update.

I finished my go through of reading OGaI, now I'm just waiting on edits. I decided that since I already had a bunch of people beta read OGaI back when I was starting to query it that I would skip betas this time around. I'm just having a couple of friends read it to check for consistency.

Of Gold and Iron is 283 pages long making it replace Week of Werewolves as my shortest full length novel (Winter Cursed of course still wins as my shortest story). It used to be 120k words long (as long as Time of Trepidation and A Certain Sort of Madness) but to fit publishing guidelines I shaved off 10k words and somehow never got them back. It is also made shorter by the fact that I am making it a different size than my other books.

But enough of that technical stuff, it's high time that I finally release my official blurb so that you can all know what this story is even about.

“Swear on something else. Swear on your humanity.”

I suddenly find it very hard to swallow. My humanity? With a jolt I realize that there are far greater things at risk here than just my life. I’m in the faerie world, anything could happen. Even immortality.

The Otherworld is the home of the faeries, deceitful, decadent, and deadly. As the next in line to become Guardians, Jaye and her brother Thomas are tasked with defending the human world from all things magical. But when a routine scouting mission ends with them trapped in the Otherworld, it becomes painfully clear that someone doesn’t want them to leave the world of the faeries. Determined to not become an immortal’s pawn, Jaye kidnaps Ravven Crowe, an arrogant solitary faerie, so that he can guide them safely home. But things quickly go from bad to worse when they are captured by the Winter Court and embroiled in a plot to start a faerie civil war. Thomas is enslaved by an Unseelie faerie, and it seems that the only way to save her brother and avoid a war is for Jaye to ally herself with Ravven.

The faeries are governed by a set of strict laws. For their own safety, the Guardians have their own rules. But with Thomas’s life hanging in the balance there is only one way to save him that does not include breaking the faerie’s Fair Law, a crime that ends in death. Together Jaye and Ravven must compete in a series of deadly tests given by the faerie courts in order to earn Jaye the right to be named the Fair Assassin and wield the Blade of Gold and Iron. As the Fair Assassin she will be permitted to kill any faerie she so chooses, but first she has to live long enough. Walking a fine line between destruction and further entanglement with Crowe, Jaye is going to have to break her own rules if she wants to win. She must trust a faerie. Her life and humanity depend on it.

I already have the cover, and it's a beauty. We are right on track for an early October publication, I'm shooting for October 3rd, but publishing waters are rather tumultuous so I'm not going to make any solid promises (especially with how unreliable this whole year has been). I'm also trying to work toward a special release "thingy" for lack of a less vague word. It is my first time doing something like this so again I'm not going to make any official announcements, I'll hopefully have more details by release week.

With that said, I am looking for ARC readers. So if you can't wait another second to read this story then sign the form below. The ARC copy doesn't have the final edits, so bear that in mind.

Anyway that's all I have about Of Gold and Iron for now. Be sure to tune in on September 5th for the cover reveal.

Sleep Like Poison Cover Reveal

You asked so I guess now I have to answer

Julian Daventry

Favorite book you've written to date?

oh my, that's a... that's a good question. All of my books have different features that I enjoy, so picking a favorite is hard. However, taking into consideration how much I hated writing some of them I would say that it would have to be either A Certain Sort of Madness or Of Gold and Iron. They both have very fun, easy to write plots, and excellent chemistry between characters. And quite a few things that happened along the way that made me cackle like an evil loon.

Where do you keep your plot bunnies until you finally get around to writing them?

One thing you should know about me is I am an extremely disorganized person. So yeah, I don't have just one place to keep my ideas. I have a notebook that I wrote some ideas in. Some I keep on my laptop. Sometimes I write it on scraps of paper which I then lose and farewell idea. Other times I do nothing with them and they float around in my head until they mutate into other ideas or collide with other floating ideas to make one big floating idea.

Faith

-Favorite kind of cookie?

chocolate chip no contest there

-Favorite X-Files snack?

I have essentially one X-Files snack. Pretzels and orange juice but I eat it like every time I watch X-Files. Heck I eat it when I don't watch the X-Files. I have a mild addiction to pretzels and orange juice XD

-Thing you're most looking forward to this summer

you know precisely what I am looking forward to. A certain visit from a certain bestie of mine.

-Ravven, Easton, Dirk, Warren, and Cedric are all in a room and you have to kill all but one. Who do you save?

Dirk. Oh I'm sorry did you expect me to be indecisive? *goes off an cries in a corner over Easton and Cedric who definitely didn't deserve it and Warren and Ravven who mildly deserved it*

Nicole

- What’s the plot of the very first story you’ve ever written?

I assume when you say written you mean finished too, so that would be A Week of Werewolves, Faeries, and Fancy Dresses, which when I first wrote it danced very perilously along the line of not actually having a plot. But yeah essentially my four main characters are trapped in another world, bound to a quest. But they don't know what the quest is. So the plot is a quest to discover their quest.

- What inspired Of Gold and Iron?

Well this is somewhat awkward to admit because I absolutely COULD NOT remember what originally inspired Of Gold and Iron. I thought and thought, wracked my brain on it for like a week, but not to worry, it wasn't all for naught I remember now! Of Gold and Iron was actually inspired by a dream I had. I can't say the dream because it gave me quite a few plot points, but yeah now we both know. It was a dream.

~ What did you learn from querying Of Gold and Iron to traditional publishing companies?

Traditional companies are not all that. Now I'm not saying that they are all bad, but they aren't all good either. A lot of authors will speak of publishers like they are the final authority on publishing and books and success. But publishers want a profit, and sometimes they won't make the best choice for the book because they want to publish only what is popular, not what merely has potential to be popular.

I still plan to try to go through with querying other books of mine in the future. But as for Of Gold and Iron it just wasn't a good fit. And even though I had very high hopes for it being traditionally published, the best choice for it is self publishing. So I guess I also learned to be flexible with my publishing plans.

~ Who is your favorite underrated X-Files character?

That's just mean I like all of theeeeeeeemmmmm. So I will cheat and say three. The Lone Gunmen.

~ Next up on your TBR pile?

It's a book called A Dream Within a Dream. Third book in a murder mystery series, I have been waiting for it for like four years and it is finally out and even though I don't remember much about book two I'm still pretty excited

Skye Hoffert

~Favorite Mulder and Scully moment?

Well now that's just mean XD Making me choose like that. Fortunately for you I did choose, because even though there are so many amazing moments and scenes in the nine seasons and two movies I have seen so far with these two there is one scene that rises above the rest. I don't know why, I just adore it XD

It's from the episode in season five called Detour, and they have lost everyone else they were with. Night has fallen with them lost in the woods, Mulder is hurt, and they talk for a while and then Scully tells Mulder to go to sleep and he asks her to sing for him. And she sings "Joy to the World"

The images above are from Pinterest.
The ones below I made, they were inspired by that scene and episode

~Favorite monster, from X-files?

Wow that is a tough one. I really like the creatures in Detour if I am being completely honest, they were kinda freaky with their hunting instincts. Eugene Tooms scared the living daylights out of me so that's always a good thing for a monster to do. I feel like I am forgetting a monster I am particularly fond of but I can't put a finger on who or what?

AN ANNOUNCEMENT (and guess what it STILL isn’t the one you think) (but you’ll like it)

(via Pinterest)

Wish I could take credit for that title but I can't. I think my brain died last week so I had my mate Faith think up a blog title for me. Wish I could have gotten someone to write this blog post too, but no unfortunately this is 100% Nicki original just with the added flavor of no brain working.

Friends and fellow bookworms I have been looking forward to today. Why? Well it's the first day of summer LONG LIVE THE SUMMER COURT (also never mind the all caps part of that sentence because it is totally spoiling my secret). What secret? Well that's the thing about secrets....

But if you must know, the other reason I have been looking forward to this day is because today I have an exciting announcement to make...

I'm publishing a book!

Oh my dear goodness, what book? You may be asking.
AHHHHHHHH, I am screaming in reply.

We have three fundamental rules when dealing with the faeries. Never trust a faerie. Don’t make bargains with faeries. And never go anywhere near a faerie without wearing a charm of protection.

(via Pinterest)

Maybe some of you recall Of Gold and Iron? I wrote it a few years back (if you are curious about the specific timeline it was around the time I was working on A Certain Sort of Madness). Perhaps this post will jog your memory a little bit: https://nickichapelwayauthor.blogspot.com/2019/01/language-of-worlds-linkup-announcements.html

Of Gold and Iron is the first book in the Of Dreams and Nightmares trilogy. It is a portal fantasy about faeries. Specifically the ones from Irish folktales and legends. It's a dark and twisty tale full of backstabbing, and plots, morally gray characters and, sarcasm. It's the story of a quest to become an assassin and how pesky love can be.

“I’m losing patience,” I grit out. His smile grows as if he can’t think of anything more enjoyable than to see me lose patience.

“Breathe, mortal, you’re in the Otherworld. You are no longer decomposing around your own bones. You have time to actually be civil.”

It has been largely finished for the past year and a half but I was querying it around with some traditional publishing companies. I didn't find any company that was a good fit for this story so it has been sitting on my computer collecting dust as I tried to figure out what just to do with it. After months of considering it, I have finally come to the decision to publish it myself.

I just really want to have the freedom of keeping the title I have come to adore for this series, and not feeling pressured to add extra steam to it (what with that being a popular thing in mainstream faerie books). I have had to butcher scenes and delete others altogether to reach the very strict word count limits of the companies I sent Of Gold and Iron to so another plus to deciding to self publish it is that I can make it however long or short the story needs to be to be cogently told. Finally, I have ideas for expansions for this series, both a prequel and a sequel series, and I want to be able to keep those options open for myself.

(via Pinterest)

I'll be working on wrapping up the final edits as my camp project next month.

“You already know not to trust the Winter Court. But avoid the Spring Court as well, as if your life depends upon it, because it most likely will. The Summer and Undersea Courts should hold you no ill intent, but they are not your friends.”

So with all that said the question remains. When I am planning to publish it?

October of 2020

“Swear on something else. Swear on your humanity.”
I suddenly find it very hard to swallow. My humanity? With a jolt I realize that there are far greater things at risk here than just my life. I’m in the faerie world, anything could happen. Even immortality.

Make sure to mark your calendars. If you want to be a part of this release I shall be looking for beta readers soon. And/or blog tour participants. Until all that you can add it to your Goodreads shelves here.

And don't forget, I'm planning to do a blogoversary celebration Q&A, I believe I said sometime in July. So if you got questions for me about my writing, this upcoming release, or as revenge for a question I may or may not have asked about you during your blogoversary be sure to drop them in the comments below!

Heya all, in case the above header wasn't a dead giveaway, today we have a special exciting post and by special exciting post I mean a... cover reveal. As I'm sure most of you know, I'm an absolute sucker for fae...

it's kind of a recurring theme in my own books >>>>

So you had better believe that I'm excited about this book titled An Echo of the Fae. It just looks so charming and whimsical. But enough about my impression of the cover why don't you just take a look at it yourself and form your own impressions.

Don't you just love that cover? I think it is quite enchanting. For all of you curious souls, the cover art/design was done by Savannah Jezowski with Dragonpen Designs.

And now a little more about the book...
Blurb:

Echo enjoys the peace and solitude of the Faeorn forest, regardless of how strange spending time in the “haunted” wood seems to others.

But on the cusp of her thirteenth birthday, the discovery of a family secret reveals why Echo has never been drawn to the sea like her mother. This discovery shakes the foundations of her world and sends Echo on a quest, not merely into the forest, but into the heart of the fae-lands themselves, to rescue the sister she didn’t know existed.

Elves, dragons, and fairy courts will put Echo’s wit and resolve to the test. But with time running out for her sister, will Echo even be able to save herself?

A fairytale adventure perfect for fans of The Secret of Roan Innish and The Girl Who Drank the Moon.

~“Enthralled by the terror, charm, riddles, and beauty of a richly depicted fae world, I devoured this marvelous book in two sittings! Readers of all ages will love Echo, a heroine strong in her weakness, clever and resolute amid her doubt and fear. An Echo of the Fae is sure to satisfy lovers of adventure and faery!” -- J.M. Stengl, author of The Faraway Castle Series

Here are some links so you can get your grubby little mitts on this lovely looking story.

A little about the author:

Jenelle first fell in love with stories through her father’s voice reading books aloud each night. A relentless opener-of-doors in hopes of someday finding a passage to Narnia, it was only natural that she soon began making up fantastical realms of her own. Jenelle currently resides in the wintry tundra of Wisconsin—which she maintains is almost as good as Narnia—with her knight-in-shining armor and their four adorable hobbits. When she is not writing, she homeschools said hobbits and helps them along on their daily adventures... which she says makes her a wizard.

And... an excerpt!

Do the fae read books? Echo wondered suddenly, and voiced the question before she had time to consider whether or not it might be rude.
“We don’t read about life; we live,” Malilia replied. “And we learn, not from reading, but from living.”
“That’s beautiful,” Echo said. “And yet... hollow.”
Malilia arched an eyebrow. “Hollow? What is in your books that is so wonderful?”
“Everything!” Echo enthused, warming to the topic. “Why, in books you can be anyone, go anywhere. There’s a freedom to reading unlike anything else. When you read, it makes you think differently about the world and your own life, and sometimes it helps you understand what’s going on around you by showing you a different perspective. And... well... there’s beauty to be discovered in books, more real and more true because it’s only limited by your own imagination. And besides, it’s.... it’s just... fun!”
Malilia grew thoughtful. “This is something you care about.”
“Yes.” Echo felt a little embarrassed. She did not usually speak so forcefully. “I like reading.”
“I can tell.” Malilia’s eyes twinkled with amusement.

Very exciting if I do say so myself. And speaking of excitement, I'm getting ready to finally have my one year blogoversary that I should have had in January but oh well what's the real difference between January and July? Anyway I'm doing a Q&A because certain people desire to extract their revenge on me. Comment on this post or any of my coming June posts with a question and it will be included in the said upcoming Q&A!

Monsters, News, and an Update or Two

(Image via me because I made it)

I made it to 20k words in BARN. 20,250 words to be brutally precise. Which isn't bad considering that I started it last month (originally I was distracted and typed night instead, and man wouldn't that have been a feat?) and that's probably the most I have written in anything else since like last November. So I am certainly pleased.

That puts me at about I-Don't-Know in this indeterminably long novel. I'm starting to find a little bit of a plot as I wade through the world building and character introductions so that's always super fun. I think I might be in Act II but since I'm not doing the Act system with this book I'm just guessing at this point.

To be honest though 90% of this book has been me guessing. Probably a side affect of writing a genre that is completely foreign to me but it's FUN.

Actual footage of me writing those 20k words.

A brief update of what is happening in BARN so far...

I'm like twelve chapters in told through four official POVs. So far it's the evening of the second day, so a lot happening in a short span of time.

Just trying to get into the character's heads though... I'm about to pass every single one of them off as clinically insane. Sheesh and I thought I had unhealthy coping methods and problems with obsession...

“You spend your day hunting monsters and your time off reading about monsters?” Nicholas asked shoving his hands into his pocket.
Renee looked up. “Do you have a problem with that?”
“I don’t know.” He shrugged and glanced around the room. It was quaintly decorated, knicknacks of cats covered shelves with floral drapes and bed sheets and striped wall paper. All pale orange and pink. It was hideous. He prayed his room looked at least a little better. If he was going to get any good wall staring in, he hoped it wasn’t a wall like this. “It just seems kind of sad.”

So far the body count is still just 1 (RIP, Terry)

“Rule number one of not dying,” Renee said pausing halfway out the door to glance at him. “Don’t go into strange woods at nightfall. A rule that Terrance was not lucky enough to follow.”

I keep forgetting to add creepy journal entries but it's fine*
*It was not actually fine

Trying to describe stuff be like: It was spooky

(Via Pinterest)

I keep drawing pictures and making stuff that concerns my characters but I can't share them because they are actually from book 4 and Spoilers(TM)

(like the one non spoiler picture I haven't already shared so enjoy)

My characters have all met each other and various impressions have been made. Currently... *checks document* Renee is reading a book, Nicholas is having an existential crisis, Warren is asleep, and Millie is off to enjoy a night on the town and get herself drugged in the name of investigation.

(via Pinterest)

Coming up next I have... to get a drugged Millie to bed. But after that there is an impromptu road trip with its very own three fold curse, a lovely hike complete with baby monsters, and a whole lot of car problems.

Anyway, that's my update for today

(and on Nicki, I have been reading through AWDAD and man I had forgotten how snarky Cedric was...I'm almost done reading through the first 50k)

Cover Reveal: At Summer's End

Y'all we have got a cover reveal for today, for an upcoming Jes Drew release.

At Summer's End is the beginning of another young adult action trilogy in the same world as The Ninja and Hunter Series, The Castaways Trilogy, and the Dystopian Takeover Trilogy.

At Summer's End takes place right after the events of The Dystopian Takeover Trilogy.

At Summer's End is Violet Stroke's story, who we first meet in Mind of Darkness, as she- and the world- deal with the consequences of the events of the previous series. So, without further ado...

The world is reeling from the near-apocalypse of the Dystopian Takeover that was only just averted by a motley crew of teenagers, including Violet Strokes.

Violet now finds herself recruited by a special opps team- Code Name Peacemakers- to train to prevent future takeovers from ever happening along with some of the other teenage heroes. Which would be a lot easier if she weren't struggling to hide her emotional and physical wounds of the last takeover, or if everyone else on the team weren't spoiled rich kids (minus one mild-mannered superhuman named Tim).

It certainly doesn't help that one of the other teenagers on the team is her long-lost childhood friend- and the son of the villains of the Dystopian Takeover- Alexander Franklin III, who is insistent that they rekindle their friendship. On top of it all, every turn she takes, she seems run into another boy from her past- with what may be an even more sinister family legacy...

Somehow, though, Violet, Alex, and the rest of the team need to figure out how to work together to protect the world from itself. That is, if Violet can stop the takeover that is going on in her very mind...

Coming June 1!
